Use of the Scout Logo

The selection and form in which the logo is to be used needs to be carefully considered. Is the logo to be used as a whole or only as one element? Sometimes the logo in black and white can be just as effective as in colour.

Here are a few items to assist:

On Stationery
The SCOUTS AUSTRALIA logo should be used primarily to identify The Association in the community. It should be used on all stationery and signage for all Sections of the Association. It is recommended that 80gsm white bond is used for all letterheads, if full colour is used. It is not recommended to use the coloured logo on coloured stock as this will give an incorrect colour effect.

The basic layout of the stationery items are based on the letterhead form at with the following dimensions:-

  • The print is set at 12mm form the top of the page (top of logo and top of bar).
  • The print is set 12mm from the left hand edge of the page to the legal lines under the logo.
  • The coloured bar is set 50mm from the left hand edge of the page and the bar is 2mm of green and 1mm of yellow, a total of 3mm wide.

If produced in black and white, the green area is black and the yellow area (white) is indicated with a fine black line (See diagram).

The height of the logo plus the two legal lines is the same as the bar.

When enlarged or reduced these measurements will proportionally alter to give the same spacing appearance.

The lettering under the logo is in Goudy and states the Association’s legal incorporation and should appear on all letterheads (check with your Branch to see if this is required).

Information lines on the right of the bar (name, address, phone, etc.) is set in Futura Book 9pt/11pt with 6.5 spaces between items. This information is set 2mm from the bar and should align at the bottom of the bar, but should not extend above the top alignment of the bar.

On printed matter and promotional material
The SCOUTS AUSTRALIA logo can also be used on all printed matter, eg. advertising material, Group notices and promotional material.

Supply the printer or publisher with a good clear copy of the logo and the PMS colours. Ensure that the logo is produced in the acceptable colours and form at. When using the logo in promotional or advertising material try to highlight the logo and not clutter it up with other design elements.

On badges, clothing etc
If it is proposed that the logo or one of the elements is to be used on clothing, eg. T-shirts, uniform, badges, etc., it should be discussed with your Branch Chief Commissioner or contact the National Secretariat.

It is necessary that the use of the logo is identified as our National image. The use on clothing etc., must conform to show the community that we have a professional corporate image. It is essential for all items to conform with the colour code and concept.

On name bars, banners etc
The SCOUTS AUSTRALIA logo should be used on name bars (available via your Snowgum or Scout Outdoor Centre), banners and display boards to keep the image in front of people.

On web pages and screen presentations
The Logo may be used on official web pages of Scout Groups, Districts, Areas, Regions and Branches and in other official on-screen presentations.

Normally colour logos will be used for screen presentation. A complete suite of approved logo files in a range of sizes and styles is provided for downloading and use on web pages and in PowerPoint presentations. Files are provided against both white and black backgrounds.

ONLY THESE FILES MAY BE USED ON SCREEN WITHOUT PRIOR AUTHORISATION. FILES MUST BE USED AT THE SIZE PROVIDED.

It is important to ensure that the screen treatment does not compromise the logo in any way. The most common errors are bad resizing and placing images designed for say a white background against a different coloured background, causing a halo effect.

If you are skilled in graphic manipulation and none of the readily available logos suits your purpose, you may separately download a large format original from which to prepare an on-screen reproduction that must be submitted to webmaster@scouts.com.au for approval before use.

At 1 September 1999, no animated logo has been authorised for use.

Other uses
The grid specifications are clearly marked out in special file included with the download set. It is shown in millimetres as a grid 140mm x 210mm, this can be varied in proportion to be 14 units by 21 units or 20 units by 30 units with the unit being what you find the easiest to use. Whether it be a sign for your Group Headquarters, a backdrop for a Gang Show or a cover for your Group magazine, the proportions will remain the same.

It must be remembered that each of the elements has been registered as trademarks, therefore they cannot be altered in proportions, shape or content.

When using the two elements together, care should be taken that they conform to one another, for example, the logotype is the same width as the emblem.
